Additions and Renovations: Downeast Coast

Project objective:  To create a master bedroom suite on the main floor of a couple’s coastal second home, so that they will have the use of the house for as long as possible. Located on the quiet arm of a bay in Washington County, Maine, the house has beautiful views of both water and woods, and taking advantage of these views was paramount in situating the new suite. Access to the outdoors was also important, so the room includes a door leading directly to a side deck. High ceilings and plentiful windows bring in a sense of airiness and light, and the use of natural building materials helps convey a feeling of bringing the surrounding woods inside. Given the winters downeast and the fact that the house is used year round, energy efficiency is very important; the new addition was built with sufficient insulation levels that no expansion of the existing heating system was required.
